Missouri Man Sentenced for Failure to Pay Legal Child Support

US Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Springfield, Missouri, man charged with Failure to Pay Legal Child Support was sentenced on April 15, 2011, by US District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken. Joseph Hinton, age 28, was sentenced to 12 months of unsupervised release, a $100 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund, and child support restitution in the amount of $16,906.28.

Hinton was indicted for failing to pay over $15,000 in past due child support by a federal grand jury on June 3, 2010. Hinton was ordered by the Seventh Judicial Circuit Court, Pennington County, South Dakota, to pay $281 per month for his minor child, commencing April 15, 2003. At the time of indictment, he had not made a child support payment since February 2007, and the total arrearage amount was $15,847.28. Hinton pled guilty to the charge on April 15, 2011.

This case was investigated by the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. Assistant US Attorneys Thomas J. Wright and Sarah Collins prosecuted the case.
