Man Admits Filing False Income Tax Returns

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 14, 2010

PITTSBURGH, Pa. ‑ Acting United States Attorney Robert S. Cessar announced today, July 14, 2010, that on July 13, 2010, Richard B. Stinson pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of income tax evasion.

Stinson pleaded guilty to one count before United States District Judge David S. Cercone.

In connection with the guilty plea, Assistant United States Attorney Michael A. Comber advised the court that Stinson submitted tax returns for 2002 and 2003 which stated taxable income that was false.  Stinson's income for those calendar years was substantially in excess of that amount.

Judge Cercone scheduled sentencing for November 15, 2010.  The law provides for a total sentence of 5 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both.  Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed is based upon the seriousness of the offense and the criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

The Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation conducted the investigation that led to the prosecution of Stinson.
