Former UNR Football Player Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison for Bank Robberies
Reno, Nev. – Former University of Nevada Reno football player Rodney Landingham was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Lawrence R. Hicks to 171 months in federal prison, five years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $2,398 in restitution for his guilty plea to two counts of armed bank robbery and one count of using a firearm in a crime of violence, announced Steven W. Myhre, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Nevada.
Landingham, age 24, was indicted in August 2004 and pleaded guilty in April 2007 to robbing two banks in Reno in June and August 2004. On June 20, 2004, Landingham used a loaded Llama .380 automatic handgun to rob a male bank teller at the Citibank at 595 Booth Street, in Reno, and on August 4, 2004, he used a loaded Llama .380 automatic handgun to rob a female bank teller at the Wells Fargo Bank at 490 California Avenue, in Reno. He pleaded guilty to using force, violence, and intimidation in both robberies.
During the August 4 robbery, Landingham wore a Halloween-type mask and costume, and fled the bank with $3,149 in currency. Included in the currency was an electronic tracking device, which alerted Reno Police Department Officers to a green Honda Accord driven by Landingham. Landingham was arrested after he jumped out of the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. He confessed to the bank robberies and said he was carrying a loaded .380 caliber gun during both robberies.
The Court ordered that Landingham's sentence be served consecutively to a Nevada state court sentence that Landingham is currently serving for the armed robberies of two convenience stores.
The case was investigated by the FBI and Reno Police Department, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Ronald C. Rachow.
