Las Vegas, Nev. – A local income tax return preparer has been sentenced to 15 months in prison, three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $15,000 fine and $118,000 in restitution for preparing false tax returns for his clients and making false statements to IRS Revenue Agents, announced Steven W. Myhre, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Nevada.

The sentence against Henry Sir Hin Wong, age 52, of Las Vegas, was imposed on Monday, March 19, 2007, by U.S. District Judge Robert C. Jones. Wong was convicted by a jury last June of aiding, preparing and submitting 22 false individual income tax returns to the IRS on behalf of 13 taxpayers for the tax years 1998 through 2001. The returns represented that the taxpayers were entitled to claim charitable contributions and casualty losses when Wong knew that the taxpayers were not entitled to the deductions. Wong also told IRS auditors that he had not prepared the clients' tax returns and had not been paid for providing tax advice, when he knew those statements were not true.

Wong is released on bond and must self-report to federal prison no later than June 22, 2007.

The case was investigated by IRS Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Thomas S. Dougherty and Russell E. Marsh.
