Tax Preparer Convicted Of Preparing False Tax Returns And Making False Statements To IRS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 14, 2006

Las Vegas, Nev. – A local income tax return preparer was convicted by a federal jury today of making false statements in his clients' tax returns and making false statements to IRS Revenue Agents concerning his preparation of tax returns, announced Daniel G. Bogden, United States Attorney for the District of Nevada.

The jury found HENRY SIR HIN WONG, age 51, of Las Vegas, guilty of willfully aiding, preparing and submitting 22 false individual income tax returns to the IRS on behalf of 13 taxpayers for the tax years 1998 through 2001. The returns falsely represented that the taxpayers were entitled to claim charitable contributions and casualty losses when the defendant knew that the taxpayers were not entitled to the deductions. The jury also found that on February 22, 2002, HENRY SIR HIN WONG knowingly and falsely told an IRS auditor that a tax return did not contain his handwriting and that he had not been paid for providing tax advice, and that on April 4, 2002, he knowingly and falsely told an IRS auditor that two taxpayers prepared their own tax return and did not pay him to prepare it.

Sentencing for HENRY SIR HIN WONG is scheduled for September 18, 2006, at 3:00 p.m. before U.S. District Judge Robert C. Jones. He faces up to three years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count of making a false statement in preparation of a tax return, and up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count of making false statements to the federal agency.

The case was investigated by Special Agents with IRS Criminal Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Thomas S. Dougherty and Russell E. Marsh.
