High Point Resident Indicted On Federal Income Tax Charges

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 11, 2008

Greensboro, NC – MARCELLUS THOMAS, 44, of High Point, North Carolina, was indicted on federal income tax charges, announced Anna Mills Wagoner, United States Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina. A thirteen-count indictment was returned on January 28, 2008, against THOMAS, an income tax return preparer, charging him with preparing and presenting false federal income tax returns to the Internal Revenue Service on behalf of twelve clients for the tax years 2002-2004. Each count alleges that Thomas illegally claimed gross receipts from operating a business that the taxpayer did not have.

If convicted, THOMAS could be sentenced on each count charged to imprisonment for a period of not more than three years, a fine of not more than $250,000, and supervised release of one year. The investigation of THOMAS was conducted by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Internal Revenue Service.

The public is cautioned that an indictment is a formal method of issuing charges. It does not, in and of itself, create an inference of guilt. An individual is presumed innocent until such time, if ever, as the government establishes his or her guilt by competent evidence beyond a reasonable doubt.
