Reidsville Residence Forteited As Proceeds Of Drug Activity
Owner Shot Sheriff’s Deputy Before Being Killed During Execution of Warrants in 2006
Greensboro, NC – The former residence of Lamond DUNCAN in Reidsville, Rockingham County, North Carolina, was forfeited by court order on August 9, 2007, announced Anna Mills Wagoner, United States Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina.
On June 28, 2006, federal, state and local law enforcement officers executed a federal arrest warrant and a state search warrant at DUNCAN’s residence. The evidence in support of the warrants alleged that DUNCAN was involved in drug dealing activities in Eden, North Carolina, for several years, and cooked and sold two ounces of cocaine base (“crack”) to police informants at the residence in March 2006. DUNCAN also had two prior felony drug convictions.
“Forfeiture is a powerful law enforcement tool for disrupting criminal enterprises and depriving criminals and their associates of the proceeds of crime,” said USA Wagoner. “This forfeiture brings closure to the unfortunate events of June 2006 and sends a message to the community that crime does not pay.”
During execution of the arrest and search warrants, DUNCAN began firing a weapon at the officers, striking a deputy sheriff in the back. Officers returned fire, killing DUNCAN. A search of the residence revealed several mechanized secret compartments, including one under a large aquarium and another under a bed. The secret compartments were large enough to hold a significant quantity of cocaine, cash or weapons. The officers also found $3,400 in United States currency.
The property, located on Ashley Loop Road, has a tax value of approximately $153,000.00. Proceeds of the forfeiture, after payment of taxes, liens, and the costs of seizing and disposing of the property, will be equitably shared with the state and local law enforcement agencies which participated in the case. These agencies may use equitably shared funds for a variety of purposes which support and enhance the prevention, investigation and prosecution of crime.
The case against DUNCAN was investigated by the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office and the Eden Police Department.
