Greensboro, NC – A Charlotte man has been sentenced to more than thirty-three years in federal prison for an armed robbery of the Coastal Federal Credit Union in Concord, North Carolina, on July 15, 2004.

Anna Mills Wagoner, United States Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina, announced the sentencing. PAUL JOHNSON, also known as MICHAEL JOHNSON and SHARIFF OMAR CARMICHAEL, of Charlotte, North Carolina, was sentenced on April 16, 2007, in Greensboro, before United States Senior District Judge William L. Osteen. In December 2006, a federal jury convicted JOHNSON of four different charges arising from the robbery, including armed bank robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. JOHNSON's prior convictions include two counts of bank robbery in 1997 and yet another bank robbery for which he was convicted by a jury in Charlotte in September 2006. More than twenty-eight years of JOHNSON’s sentence will run consecutively to his sentence for the Charlotte conviction, resulting in a combined sentence of 57 years.

The case against JOHNSON was investigated by the Concord Police Department, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
