RALEIGH - United States Attorney Thomas G. Walker announced today that the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), one of the Nation’s premier civil rights agencies, will award the Raleigh-Durham Joint Terrorism Task Force and federal prosecutors at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Raleigh, the 2012 ADL Service, Honor, Integrity, Excellence, Leadership, and Dedication (SHIELD) Award for the investigation and prosecution of Daniel Patrick Boyd and his co-conspirators.  The award ceremony will take place on Monday, September 24, 2012 in Washington, D.C.  Boyd was the leader of a homegrown violent extremist group which made plans to wage violent jihad overseas and in the United States.  “This award encapsulates the idea that shared missions, attitudes, and dedication by prosecutors and investigative teams are harbingers of success, and most certainly worthy of recognition,” says USA Walker.  “We are honored by this prestigious recognition.”  Members of the U.S. Attorney’s Office who received this award are Assistant U.S. Attorney Barbara D. Kocher, Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason M. Kellhofer, Assistant U.S. Attorney John S. Bowler, and Litigation Support Specialist Jacqueline M. Nobling.

 At the ceremony the ADL will honor law enforcement heroes who have protected our nation and communities from hate crimes and terrorist threats.  The SHIELD award was created in 2010 to annually honor law enforcement for major successes in the fight against hate crimes and domestic and international terrorism.  The Award’s name reflects law enforcement’s role as protectors, and is also an acronym for the core values of the profession:  Service, Honor, Integrity, Excellence, Leadership, and Dedication.  “The Award gives us an opportunity to publicly recognize and express our appreciation to those who protect our nation and communities and who guard our lives and freedoms,” said Elise Jarvis, ADL’s Associate Director for Law Enforcement Outreach.

Kocher, Kellhofer, Bowler, and Nobling, along with many other federal and local law enforcement agents, analysts, and attorneys assisted in the investigation of the case.  The award was given for their dedication and extraordinary competence in the investigation and successful prosecution of the homegrown violent extremist group led by Daniel Patrick Boyd and known as the Triangle Terror Group. 

The team conducted, supported, indicted, and prosecuted, the four-year long investigation into a homegrown violent extremist group who was heavily armed, organized, and making plans to wage violent jihad overseas and here in the United States.
