ROWAN COUNTY CHIEF DEPUTY RECEIVES LAW ENFORCEMENT AWARD

RALEIGH - United States Attorney Thomas G. Walker announced that Rowan County Chief Deputy Sheriff David Ramsey received the David G. Wilhelm Award at the Fourteenth Annual Organized Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCEDTF) Conference in Sunset Beach, North Carolina. The conference is a four-day drug training conference open to federal, state and local law enforcement officers.

“David Ramsey exemplifies everything that Agent Wilhelm stood for,” commented Sheriff Kevin L. Auten. “His dedication and service to law enforcement is an example of the highest standard of public service.”

Deputy Ramsey is a graduate of North Carolina University-Charlotte. From 1977 to 1978, he worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Charlotte as a clerk. He then went to work for the Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office until 1980 when he transferred to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NC SBI). In 2003, he retired from the NC SBI. Later that year he went to work for the Iredell County Sheriff’s Department. From 2003 to 2011, he worked his way up through the ranks and in January, 2011, he became Chief Deputy of the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

This is the fourth year that the award has been given to a deserving officer. On March 12, 2005, David Wilhelm, a United States Customs Agent, was shot to death. The gunman killed three others in an Atlanta courthouse before shooting Agent Wilhelm. The award is given in remembrance of a talented and diligent investigator.
