ELIZABETH CITY MAN CHARGED WITH
SEVEN COUNTS OF ILLEGAL DRUG DISTRIBUTION
RALEIGH - United States Attorney George E.B. Holding announced that a Federal Grand Jury returned a Criminal Indictment on February 24, 2010, charging LESLIE OWEN FEREBEE, 46, of Elizabeth City, North Carolina with seven counts of drug distribution.
According to information produced at the March 22, 2010, detention hearing, on March 17, 2010, Pasquotank County Sheriff’s investigators arrested FEREBEE after a brief chase when he fled on foot from a traffic stop on Crooked Run Road in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Powder cocaine and $4,700.00 in U.S. currency were seized from FEREBEE.
The charges and maximum penalties include:
Count 1: Conspiring to distribute 50 grams or more of cocaine base (crack) and 500 grams or more of cocaine, in violation of Title 21, United States Code, Section 846, with a maximum penalty of up to life imprisonment followed by up to five years supervised release and a fine of up to $4,000,000.00.
Count 2: Distribution of 50 grams or more of cocaine base (crack), in violation of Title 21, United States Code, Section 841(a)(1), which carries a maximum penalty of up to to life imprisonment followed by up to five years supervised release and a fine of up to $4,000,000.00.
Counts 3-7: Distribution of a quantity of cocaine base (crack), in violation of Title 21, United States Code, Section 841(a)(1). Each count carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years imprisonment followed by up to three years of supervised release and a fine of up to $1,000,000.00.
An indictment contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
Investigation of this case was conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Eric Goulian represented the government.
