Informational: Federal Court Initial Appearance

Bill Mercer, United States Attorney for the District of Montana, announced today that during a federal court session in Great Falls, on September 22, 2009, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Keith Strong, the following individual appeared:

CHARLES RUNYAN, JR., a resident of Hardy, Nebraska and Havre, Montana, made an initial appearance on a complaint alleging failure to register. He is currently released on special conditions. If charged with this offense, RUNYAN faces possible penalties of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and 5 years supervised release. Assistant U.S. Attorney Rebekah J. French is the prosecutor for the United States. The investigation was conducted by a cooperative effort between the U.S. Marshals Service and the Hill County Sheriff's Office.

A complaint is merely a written statement of the essential facts constituting the offense charged.
