FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KC MAN SENTENCED FOR FILING FALSE TAX RETURN

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Beth Phillips, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Kansas City, Mo., man was sentenced in federal court today for filing a false tax return.

William E. Schroff, 72, of Kansas City, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Howard F. Sachs this morning to two years in federal prison without parole. The court also ordered Schroff to pay $48,060 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.

Schroff owned and operated several businesses, including an industrial sandblasting and painting company known as ANS Company, during the time of the offenses. Schroff pleaded guilty on Dec. 1, 2009, to filing a Form 1040 with the Internal Revenue Service on May 28, 2003, in which he reported taxable income of $1,075 for the calendar year 2001. In reality, Schroff’s taxable income that year was approximately $131,568.

The court ruled at today’s hearing that Schroff engaged in additional relevant conduct that resulted in a total tax loss in excess of $200,000.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney William L. Meiners. It was investigated by IRS-Criminal Investigation.
