FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ARIZONA MAN SENTENCED FOR 90 KILOGRAMS OF COCAINE;

WHOLESALE VALUE ABOUT $2 MILLION

            SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Beth Phillips, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Yuma, Ariz., man was sentenced in federal court today for possession with the intent to distribute cocaine after officers found 90 kilograms of cocaine hidden in his trailer during an inspection stop on Interstate 44 in Greene County, Mo.

            Carlos R. Delgado, Jr., 50, a citizen of Mexico residing in Yuma, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays this morning to seven years and six months in federal prison without parole.

            On Dec. 21, 2009, Delgado pleaded guilty to being in possession with the intent to distribute in excess of five kilograms of cocaine. Delgado was stopped by the Missouri State Highway Patrol while traveling eastbound on I-44 on Oct. 28, 2006, in Greene County. He was driving a tractor-trailer and was stopped by a commercial motor vehicle officer in order to conduct a Department of Transportation inspection.

            During the course of the inspection, an officer searching the vehicle found packages wrapped in duct tape in a hidden compartment of the refrigeration unit of the trailer. Those packages contained a total of over 90 kilograms of cocaine, with a wholesale value between $1.8 million and $2.25 million and an estimated street value much higher.

            This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David P. Rush. It was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
