FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

80-YEAR-OLD KC MAN PLEADS GUILTY

TO BANK ROBBERY

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Beth Phillips, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced that a Kansas City, Mo., man pleaded guilty in federal court today to robbing UMB Bank.

Augusta Cannon, 80, of Kansas City, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Greg Kays this morning to the charge contained in a Jan. 26, 2010, federal indictment.

Cannon admitted that he entered UMB Bank, 103rd and Stateline Road, Kansas City, Mo., on Dec. 22, 2009. Cannon displayed what appeared to be a firearm to a bank teller, stating, “Give me your money.” The teller placed $8,755 in the bag and Cannon left the bank.

A person who knows Cannon recognized him in a surveillance photograph from the robbery in the local media and contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Cannon, who was arrested at his residence, told agents that he first had attempted to rob US Bank, 8701 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City. However, when the teller told him she didn’t have any money, he left the bank. A few minutes later, Cannon said, he used a pellet pistol to rob UMB Bank.

Under the terms of today’s plea agreement, the government and Cannon agree to recommend to the court a sentence of probation, based upon Cannon’s age, mental condition at the time of the offense and his years of service in the U.S. Air Force. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul S. Becker. It was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department.
