FORMER LIBERTY PATHOLOGIST SENTENCED

FOR FAILING TO FILE TAX RETURNS


            KANSAS CITY, Mo. – John F. Wood, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced today that a former Liberty, Mo., pathologist has been sentenced in federal court for failing to file federal income tax returns.


            Miles J. Jones, 56, of Liberty, was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison without parole on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009. The court also ordered Jones to pay a fine of $20,000. Jones must also pay $79,225 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.


            On Aug. 8, 2008, Jones pleaded guilty to two violations of failing to file federal tax returns for tax years 2002 and 2003. Jones was a medical doctor with his own practice, Consultative and Diagnostic Pathology, during those years.


            Jones earned $267,800 in 2002 and $271,000 in 2003. The taxes due and owing on his unfiled 2002 returns was $63,498 and the taxes due and owing on his 2003 returns was $10,231.


            This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Roseann A. Ketchmark. It was investigated by IRS-Criminal Investigation.
