Laurel Man Pleads Guilty to Filing a False Tax Return

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 10, 2010

Baltimore, Maryland - Mr. Jung Jun Park, age 42, of Laurel, Maryland, pleaded guilty today to making a false declaration on a tax return.

The guilty plea was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein; and Special Agent in Charge C. André Martin of the Internal Revenue Service - Criminal Investigation.

“Honest taxpayers need to be reassured that everyone is paying their fair share,” stated C. André Martin, Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge, Washington DC Field Office. “The IRS-Criminal Investigation will investigate and prosecute those who violate our tax system.”

According to Park’s plea agreement, during 2005, 2006, and 2007, Jung Jun Park was employed by Beauty Lane Silver Spring LLC, which operated four retail beauty supply stores in Maryland and each of those years was paid wages of $91,000. However, Park’s Form W-2 indicated wages paid of: $26,600 in 2005; $32,000 in 2006; and $51,600 in 2007. Park filed his tax returns, knowing that his adjusted gross income was more than he reported. The underreporting of Park’s income resulted in a tax loss of $15,654 for 2005, a tax loss of $12,246 for 2006, and a tax loss of $9,383 for 2007. The total of additional taxes due is $37,283.

Park faces a maximum sentence of three years in prison. U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake has scheduled sentencing for May 27, 2010 at 9:00 a.m.

United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commended Assistant United States Attorney Richard C. Kay, who is prosecuting the case.
