Boston - A Westfield woman was convicted today in U.S. District Court in Springfield for stealing from the Westfield Tax Collector’s Office.
Susan Duffy, 50, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Michael A. Ponsor to theft from a federally-funded program and filing a false tax return.
From 2008 through 2011, Duffy, employed as an assistant clerk in the Westfield Tax Collector’s Office, stole tax payments made to the City of Westfield and used the payments for her personal use. Over the course of her fraud, Duffy stole more than $110,000 and furthermore failed to report this illicit income on her tax returns.
Sentencing is scheduled for March 27, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Duffy faces up to 10 years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.
United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz, William P. Offord, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigations in Boston, and Chief John A. Camerota of the Westfield Police Department, made the announcement today. The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigations in Boston. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Hart Smyth, Chief of Ortiz’s Springfield Branch Office.
