BOSTON, Mass. - A Boston man was convicted today in federal court of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

LAMAR CARRIGAN, 35, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Nancy Gertner to being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Carrigan faces up to life imprisonment with a minimum mandatory sentence of 15 years imprisonment to be followed by five years of supervised release. Judge Gertner scheduled sentencing for May 24, 2011.

Had the case proceeded to trial the Government’s evidence would have proven that in the early morning hours of Feb. 1, 2008, an individual contacted the Boston Police Emergency Dispatcher about an individual posing as a Boston Police officer. The individual stated that this person, later identified as Carrigan, pulled him over on a Dorchester street, and assaulted him with a firearm. A short time later the unoccupied vehicle was located. Boston Police set up surveillance on the vehicle and within a few minutes observed Carrigan enter the vehicle and drive away. A perimeter had been established by the Boston Police and the vehicle was stopped on Southwood Street. As officers approached the vehicle, Carrigan attempted to flee, but was taken into custody without further incident. Located in Carrigan’s jacket pocket was a .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun containing six rounds of ammunition.

United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz, Guy Thomas, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ Boston Field Division and Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis made the announcement today. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth G. Shine of Ortiz’s Major Crime Unit.
