SENORA NANCY, FORMER TAX PREPARER IN EVERETT, SENTENCED FOR TAX FRAUD

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 30, 2011

BOSTON, Mass. - A Lynn woman was sentenced today in federal court for preparing false tax returns at Senora Nancy’s Tax 1040, a tax preparation business that she operated in Everett.

NANCY BAEZ, 39, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Rya Zobel to six months in prison to be followed by 12 months of supervised release. On December 16, 2010, BAEZ pleaded guilty to aiding and assisting in the preparation of false tax returns

BAEZ operated a tax preparation service that primarily served the Hispanic community in and around Everett. BAEZ held herself out to her unsophisticated clients as an experienced professional who could obtain fast refunds from the Internal Revenue Service. BAEZ’s clients relied upon her to accurately prepare their tax returns, for a fee, in their effort to comply with U.S. tax laws. BAEZ flouted those tax laws by routinely fabricating information on her client’s returns, thereby causing her clients to receive refunds to which they were not entitled.

U.S. Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and William P. Offord, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation, Boston Field Division, made the announcement today. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lori J. Holik of Ortiz’s Economic Crimes Unit.
