BOSTON, Mass. - A Worcester man was sentenced today in federal court for making a false statement in connection with his rental of a handgun from a gun range in Worcester.

VICTOR ALBERTI, 27, of Worcester, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV to eight years imprisonment, to be followed by three years of supervised release. Alberti pleaded guilty to making a false statement in acquiring a firearm, namely denying that he had been previously convicted of a felony, on June 22, 2010.

At the earlier plea hearing, the prosecutor told the Court that had the case proceeded to trial the Government’s evidence would have proven that on August 2, 2006 Alberti went to the now-defunct Boston Gun Range and rented two firearms. On a form that Alberti completed before renting the handguns, he stated that he had not been previously convicted of a felony. The prosecutor noted that at the time of the statement on the form, Alberti had been convicted of a felony drug possession charge and a felony assault and battery charge in state court. When interviewed, Alberti admitted to renting guns at the Boston Gun Range despite his criminal record.

United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and Guy Thomas, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives - Boston Field Division made the announcement today. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David Hennessy of Ortiz’s Worcester Branch Office.
