JOINT STATEMENT - CARMEN M. ORTIZ, UNITED STATES ATTORNEY AND WARREN T. BAMFORD, FBI SPECIAL AGENT IN CHARGE

MARCH 10, 2010

Boston...On Tuesday, March 9, 2010 a Superseding Indictment was returned in the Southern District of New York (SDNY), charging ARTHUR NIGRO, ANTHONY ARILLOTTA, and FOTIOS “Freddy” GEAS with Racketeering Conspiracy, Racketeering, Murder in Aid of Racketeering, Murder for the Purpose of Obstructing Justice, Extortion Conspiracy, Extortion Conspiracy and Interstate Travel in Aid of Racketeering. Those charges arise out of the alleged role of all three defendants in, among other criminal activities, the murder of Adolfo Bruno in Springfield, MA on November 23, 2003.

Presently, GEAS is charged in the District of Massachusetts with Murder in Aid of Racketeering for his alleged involvement in the Bruno murder. However, after much consideration, and with the concurrence of our counterparts in New York, the Hampden County District Attorney and the Massachusetts State Police, we have arrived at a mutual agreement that
consolidation is the best manner to achieve a just result in this case. The charges against GEAS in Massachusetts will be dismissed in lieu of the broader Indictment that was returned in the SDNY. This joint decision is based on considerations relating to prosecutorial and judicial efficiency, as well as evidentiary developments.

We would like to thank and acknowledge the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police for their participation and counsel in this matter.
