NORTH BROOKFIELD MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO TAX EVASION SCHEME
BOSTON, MA - A North Brookfield man was convicted in federal court of two counts of federal tax evasion.
United States Attorney Carmen M. Ortiz and Susan M. Dukes, Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation - Boston Field Division, announced today that THOMAS RICKABY, 51, of North Brookfield, pled guilty before U.S. District Judge Saris to an Information charging two counts of Income Tax Evasion.
At today’s plea hearing, the prosecutor told the Court that had the case proceeded to trial the Government’s evidence would have proven that RICKABY failed to file federal tax returns for calendar years 1996 through 2005 and that the Internal Revenue Service served him with notices of delinquencies. The evidence would have further shown that starting in May of 2002 RICKABY subscribed to services offered by entities called Business Management Systems and Contract America, Ltd. to unlawfully conceal his income and assets from the Internal Revenue Service. The evidence would have proven under the first count of the Information that RICKABY evaded payments for delinquent taxes from the earlier years and under the second count that RICKABY evaded assessment of taxes for calendar year 2005.
Judge Saris scheduled sentencing for November 4, 2010. RICKABY faces up to 5 years imprisonment, to be followed by 3 years of supervised release and a $100,000 fine on each count, together with payment of the government’s costs of prosecution.
The case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Victor A. Wild of Ortiz’s Economic Crimes Unit and Trial Attorneys John N. Kane, Jr. and Jeffrey Shih of the Department of Justice’s Tax Division.
