SHIRLEY A. BUNDA, PLEADS GUILTY TO THEFT OF GOVERNMENT FUNDS
SHIRLEY A. BUNDA, age 75, a resident of Gretna, Louisiana, pled guilty in federal court today before U. S. District Judge Susie Morgan to one count of theft of government funds, announced U.S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to court documents, BUNDA’s mother, L.A., was a beneficiary of the Social Security Administration (SSA), an agency of the United States. BUNDA shared a joint checking account with her mother. BUNDA failed to inform SSA of her mother’s death on February 15, 1998 and SSA continued to provide L.A.’s monthly benefits via direct deposit to the joint checking account BUNDA shared with her mother. From February 15, 1998 to August 3, 2011, BUNDA received $173,297.00 in SSA benefits to which she was not entitled.
Upon sentencing, scheduled for October 10, 2012, BUNDA faces a maximum term of imprisonment of ten (10) years, a $250,0000 fine, restitution to SSA, three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment, and a $100 special assessment.
The case was investigated by the Social Security Administration, Office of Inspector General. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U. S. Attorney Julia K. Evans.
