EUGENE THOMPSON, a 36 year-old resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was convicted yesterday by a federal jury sitting in New Orleans of four counts of violations of the Federal Controlled Substances Act and the Federal Gun Control Act, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten. Specifically, THOMPSON was convicted in Count 1, conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute 280 grams or more of cocaine base (“crack”) and a quantity of cocaine hydrochloride; Count 2 , possessing with the intent to distribute 280 grams or more of cocaine base (“crack”) and a quantity of cocaine hydrochloride; Count 3, possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime; and Count 4, being a felon in possession of a firearm.

On Counts 1 and 2, THOMPSON faces a maximum of life in prison, a fine of up to $20 million, ten (10) years of supervised release, and a $100.00 special court assessment. On Count 3, THOMPSON faces a mandatory five (5) years confinement consecutive to any other term of imprisonment, a fine of up to $250,000, three (3) years of supervised release, and a $100.00 special court assessment. On Count 4, THOMPSON faces a maximum of ten (10) years confinement, a fine of up to $250,000, three (3) years of supervised release, and a $100.00 special court assessment

According to court documents approximately one kilogram of crack cocaine and a little less than a half kilogram of powder cocaine was seized from the house where THOMPSON and another individual were arrested. At the time of the arrest, law enforcement officers also found two firearms in close proximity to the drugs and a large quantity of cash.

This case was investigated by Agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration. This matter was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Theodore Carter and Kevin Boitman.
