METAIRIE MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO PIRATING AND SELLING OVER $123,000 WORTH OF CDS AND DVDS
LAWRENCE DEJEAN, age 38, a resident of Metairie, Louisiana, pleaded guilty in federal court today before U. S. District Court Judge Kurt D. Engelhardt to criminal infringement of a copyright, announced United States Attorney Jim Letten.
According to court documents, on December 11, 2010, agents with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations encountered DEJEAN at a booth at the Algier’s Flea Market selling pirated CDs and DVDs. He had, in his possession, approximately 10,562 pirated discs containing copyrighted works. Immediately afterward, agents executed a search warrant on a storage facility DEJEAN rented, in which they found, identified, and confiscated over 4,800 additional pirated CDs and DVDs. In total, the collective retail value of the pirated discs seized from DEJEAN was approximately $123,160.00.
DEJEAN faces a maximum term of imprisonment of not more than five (5) years, followed by up to one (1) year of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing has been scheduled for February 8, 2012.
The case was investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jordan Ginsberg.
