ILLEGAL ALIEN SENTENCED FOR ATTEMPTING TO SHIP AMMUNITION WITHOUT WRITTEN NOTICE TO A CONTRACT CARRIER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 13, 2011

MARY CRUZ PORTILLO-MEJIA, age 25, a citizen of Honduras, was sentenced today in federal court by U. S. District Judge Eldon E. Fallon to approximately five (5) months imprisonment, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Fallon ordered that PORTILLO be placed on two (2) years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment, during which time the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should she violate any terms of her supervised release.

According to court documents, on July 14, 2011, PORTILLO pled guilty to one count of superseding bill of information admitting that she knowingly delivered 2,175 rounds of ammunition to a contract carrier in Kenner, Louisiana for shipment to an unlicensed person in Honduras, without written notice to that contract carrier. PORTILLO is an illegal alien.

The case was investigated by the Gulf Coast Border Enforcement Security Task Force (BEST). The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Robert Weir.
