METAIRIE MAN CHARGED WITH CRIMINAL INFRINGEMENT OF A COPYRIGHT
LAWRENCE DEJEAN, age 38, a resident of Metairie, Louisiana, was charged in a one-count Bill of Information with criminal infringement of a copyright, announced United States Attorney Jim Letten.
According to the Bill of Information, on December 11, 2010, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents encountered DEJEAN at a booth at the Algier’s Flea Market selling pirated CDs and DVDs. DEJEAN knowingly and willfully for the purpose of commercial advantage and private financial gain, infringed the copyright of copyrighted works by distributing during a 180-day period ten (10) or more copies of the copyrighted works, which have a total retail value in excess of $2,500.
If convicted, DEJEAN faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five (5) years, followed by up to one (1) year of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.
United States Attorney Letten reiterated that the Bill of Information is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case was investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jordan Ginsberg.
