RAYMOND L. POLK, 27, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was charged today in a two count indictment by a Federal Grand Jury for the illegal possession of firearms, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten. According to the indictment, POLK was prohibited from possessing firearms because he had previous felony convictions for cocaine possession and distribution. Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone who has been previously convicted of a felony to be in possession of any firearm or ammunition.

If convicted on the two count indictment, POLK faces a maximum term of imprisonment of ten (10) years, a maximum fine of $250,000.00, three (3) years supervised release following any term of imprisonment, and a $100 special assessment for each count.

U. S. Attorney Jim Letten reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the accused must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the New Orleans Police Department. The prosecution of the case is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Abram McGull, II.
