ALIEN SENTENCED FOR ATTEMPTING TO SMUGGLE FIREARMS AND AMMUNITION FROM THE UNITED STATES
OVILIO SANCHEZ-BAUTISTA, age 25, a citizen of Honduras, was sentenced yesterday in federal court by U. S. District Judge Jay C. Zainey to ten (10) months imprisonment, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten. In addition to the term of imprisonment, Judge Zainey ordered that SANCHEZ be placed on two (2) years of supervised release following the term of imprisonment, during which time the defendant will be under federal supervision and risks an additional term of imprisonment should he violate any terms of his supervised release.
According to court documents, on April 5, 2011, SANCHEZ pled guilty to one count of an indictment admitting that in May 2010, he fraudulently and knowingly concealed and facilitated the transportation of firearms and ammunition, with the intent to export those goods from the United States to Honduras, contrary to law.
The case was investigated by agents of the U. S. Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) with the assistance of the the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Robert Weir.
