STEVE MATTHEWS, age 43, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was sentenced today in federal court by U. S. District Judge Helen G. Berrigan to five (5) years (60 months) imprisonment, for beinga convicted felon in possession of a firearm, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten. MATTHEWS was also ordered to serve three (3) years supervised release following imprisonment during which time he will be under federal supervision and risks additional imprisonment should he violate any terms of the release.

According to court documents, on September 11, 2009, MATTHEWS, was in possession of a Smith & Wesson model 681, .357 Magnum revolver, during a domestic violence matter. MATTHEWS was previously convicted of Armed Robbery and Possession of Firearm by a Person Convicted of Certain Felonies on July 29, 1992 in Orleans Parish. As such, MATTHEWS, was prohibited by federal law from possessing a firearm.

The case was investigated by the New Orleans Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives and was prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Edward J. Rivera of the Violent Crime Unit.
