MARK BROOKS, age (22), a resident of New Orleans, pled guilty today in federal court before U. S. District Judge Martin L. C. Feldman to two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to the factual basis, BROOKS admitted that on January 11, 2009, he was in possession of a unknown make and model firearm on January 11, 2009. In addition, on February 24, 2009, during an investigation of a shooting that took place during a Mardi Gras parade, BROOKS was arrested and had in his possession a 9mm handgun. BROOKS was previously convicted of possession of crack cocaine on February 22, 2008 in Orleans Parish.

BROOKS faces a possible maximum sentence of ten (10) years imprisonment and a $250,000 as to each count. Sentencing has been scheduled for January 19, 2011.

This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, and the New Orleans Police Department. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Maurice E. Landrieu, Jr.
