TAMARA BERNARD, age 37, of New Orleans, Louisiana, pled guilty in federal court today before U. S. District Judge Lance M. Africk to theft of mail, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

According to court documents, BERNARD was an employee at the United Parcel Service (UPS) store located on St. Charles Avenue in New Orleans. BERNARD admitted that she stole a letter containing cash and other items that was deposited in the collection slot for U.S. mail at the UPS store.

BERNARD faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five (5) years, a fine of $250,000 and three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment. Sentencing is set for November 18, 2010 at 2:00 P.M.

The case is being investigated by the United States Postal Service - Office of Inspector General, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Loan “Mimi” Nguyen.
