CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CHARGES FILED AGAINST BELLE CHASSE MAN
NICHOLAS BROEKMAN, 29, of Belle Chase, Louisiana, was charged in a Bill of Information for federal crimes involving the sexual exploitation of children, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to court documents, on June 25, 2009, BROEKMAN was found to be in possession of a computer that contained images of child pornography. Pursuant to a warrant, BROEKMAN was arrested today, appeared before a U. S. Magistrate Judge and was released on bond that included electronic monitoring and other special conditions. Trial has been scheduled for March 15, 2010.
If convicted, BROEKMAN faces a possible maximum sentence of twenty (20) years imprisonment followed by up to a lifetime term of supervised release, a $250,000.00 fine and be required to register as a sex offender.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the Bill of Information is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
This case is being investigated by special agents from the U. S. Department of Homeland Security, ICE. The prosecution of this case is being handled by Project Safe Childhood Coordinator, Assistant U. S. Attorney Brian M. Klebba.
