NEW ORLEANS MAN ARRESTED AFTER MAKING THREATS TO KILL THE PRESIDENT
JOHN TURNPAUGH, age 47, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, was charged in a federal criminal complaint for making threats to kill President Barack Obama, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to court documents, on December 30, 2009, a New Orleans Police Department 911 received an anonymous call from a person who stated that he was going to kill Barack Obama and his wife. The NOPD and the U. S. Secret Service conducted an investigation and determined that the call was made from the cell phone of JOHN TURNPAUGH.
If convicted, TURNPAUGH faces a maximum sentence of five (5) years imprisonment, a fine of $250,000.00 and three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the complaint is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case was investigated by the United States Secret Service and the New Orleans Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Maurice Landrieu and Salvadore Perricone.
