A man involved in dealing methamphetamine and marijuana was sentenced May 13, 2010, to more than 21 years in federal prison.

Jay Monson, 41, from Clear Lake, Iowa, received the prison term after a February 11, 2010, guilty plea to one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and one count of distributing methamphetamine. Monson was previously convicted of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine on December 22, 2000, and conspiracy to distribute cocaine on May 5, 1993, both in United States District Court.

At the guilty plea, Monson admitted that, from 2007 through December 2009, he was involved in a conspiracy that distributed at least three kilograms of methamphetamine and at least 150 pounds of marijuana in the Clear Lake area. On December 14, 2009, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, Monson distributed approximately ½ pound of methamphetamine to an undercover agent. On December 14, 2009, law enforcement officers seized approximately 2 ½ pounds of methamphetamine during a search of Monson’s residence.

Monson was sentenced in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge Linda R. Reade. Monson was sentenced to 262 months’ imprisonment and fined $5,000. A special assessment of $200 was imposed. He must also serve a 10-year term of supervised release after the prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

Monson is being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shawn S. Wehde and investigated by the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement; Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office; Clear Lake Police Department; Fort Dodge Police Department; Mason City Police Department; North Central Iowa Narcotics Task Force; and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
