Waterloo Gun Thief Pleads Guilty To Federal Charges

A man who helped steal 26 guns and then possessed one of the guns when he had marijuana he was going to sell pled guilty today in federal court in Cedar Rapids.

Corey Carter, age 21, from Waterloo, Iowa, was convicted of one count of being a felon in possession of firearms, one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and one count of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.

At the plea hearing, Carter admitted he was convicted on March 30, 2009, of Third Degree Burglary in Black Hawk County, Iowa. On December 17, 2009, Carter and Irwin Wade, age 19, stole 26 firearms from the Waterloo home of Wade’s aunt and uncle. On December 18, 2009, Carter possessed marijuana with the intent to distribute it and possessed one of the stolen loaded handguns in furtherance of this drug crime. Carter had the marijuana and gun in a Waterloo motel room.

On May 7, 2010, Wade pled guilty to possession of the stolen firearms. His sentencing is set for September 15, 2010, at 8 a.m.

Carter’s sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade will be set after a presentence report is prepared. Carter remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing. Carter faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 5 years’ imprisonment and a possible maximum sentence of life imprisonment, a $750,000 fine, $300 in special assessments, and up to life on supervised release following any imprisonment.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Bob Teig as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a cooperative local, state, and federal program aimed at the enhanced prosecution of gun crimes. The case was investigated by the Waterloo Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
