FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 5, 2011

Wifredo A. Ferrer, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and Mark R. Trouville, Special Agent in Charge, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Miami Field Division, announce the indictment of Boynton Beach (Fla.) Police Officer David Britto, 28. The indictment alleges that from June 2009 until March 4, 2011, that Britto conspired to possess with the intent to distribute more than five hundred grams of methamphetamine. Britto faces a potential life sentence if convicted.

U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer stated, “Corruption by public officials, undermines the public's trust in our public servants. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to helping to restore that trust and to maintain untarnished the good name of the many honest public servants who work and risk their lives each day to help make our communities a better place.”

“The decision to deal drugs while carrying a badge is not only a breach of the law enforcement oath, but a community tragedy as well. The Drug Enforcement Administration pursues drug traffickers no matter what their profession,” stated Mark R. Trouville, Special Agent in Charge, Drug Enforcement Administration, Miami Field Division.

The indictment of Britto is the result of an ongoing Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) led by DEA. The principal mission of the OCDETF program is to identify, disrupt and dismantle the most serious drug trafficking, weapons trafficking and money laundering organizations, and those primarily responsible for the nation's illegal drug supply.

Mr. Ferrer commends the outstanding investigative efforts of DEA in Miami. Mr. Ferrer would also like to thank the Broward Sheriff's Office, the Ft. Lauderdale Police Department, the Miami Beach Police Department, the City of Miami Police Department, the Miami-Dade Police Department, and the Boynton Beach Police Department Internal Affairs. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Adam Fels.

An indictment is only an accusation and a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
