District Man Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison
For January 2012 Slaying in Southeast Washington
-Victim Was Shot While Running Away from Confrontation-

      WASHINGTON - Michael Galloway, 19, of Washington, D.C, was sentenced today to 15 years of incarceration on a charge stemming from the slaying of another teenager earlier this year in Southeast Washington, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. announced.

      Galloway pled guilty in September 2012 to voluntary manslaughter while armed. He was sentenced by the Honorable William M. Jackson of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Upon completion of his prison term, Galloway will be placed on five years of supervised release.

      According to the government’s evidence, Galloway shot the victim, Navarro Brown, 18, on the evening of Jan. 10, 2012, after observing an altercation between Mr. Brown and a teenage girl in the 3200 block of 23rd Street SE. Galloway approached Mr. Brown, and the two exchanged words. Then, as Mr. Brown ran away, Galloway pulled out a handgun and shot him in the back of the head.

      Galloway was arrested by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) in August 2012 and admitted to the shooting. He maintained that he did not intend to kill Mr. Brown.

      In announcing the sentence, U.S. Attorney Machen commended the work of the detectives, officers and mobile crime scene technicians who investigated the case for the MPD. He also acknowledged the efforts of those who worked on the case from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, including Paralegal Specialist Marian Russell, Victim Advocate Marcey Rinker, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Worm, who investigated and prosecuted the matter.
