Virginia Man Convicted of Stalking
- Defendant Used a GPS Device to Track His Ex-Girlfriend -

     WASHINGTON - Ulus Jorden, 41, of Alexandria, Virginia, has been convicted by a jury of two counts of stalking his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. announced today.

     Jorden was convicted January 26, 2012, following a trial in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. The Honorable Lynn Leibovitz scheduled sentencing for March 29, 2012. Jorden faces up to 12 months of incarceration on each of the two charges.

     The government’s evidence at trial demonstrated that after Jorden and his ex-girlfriend’s relationship ended in August 2010, Jorden began to engage in a course of conduct that was intended to cause her and her new boyfriend to fear for their safety and to suffer emotional distress. He and his ex-girlfriend have a young daughter, and Jorden planted a GPS device into a stuffed dolphin he gave to the girl so that he could track his ex-girlfriend. When the GPS was discovered, also sewn in its belly was a disparaging note directed at the ex-girlfriend.

     In addition, evidence showed that Jorden followed his ex-girlfriend in an effort to determine where the new boyfriend worked. He filed false complaints against the new boyfriend in Maryland and the District of Columbia in an effort to have the new boyfriend arrested. Finally, he also threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend in person and over the telephone.

     In announcing the verdict, U.S. Attorney Machen commended the efforts of the Metropolitan Police Department officers who were involved in the investigation and prosecution of this case, including Detective Carol Queen and Officer Carolyn Hoeges.

     U.S. Attorney Machen also cited the efforts of several members of his staff, including Victim Witness Specialists Christina Principe, Jennifer Clark, Laverne Forrest, and Michael Hailey; Litigation Support Services Technicians Leif Hickling and Jeannie Lattimore-Brown; Criminal Investigator Durand Odom; Paralegals Troy Griffith and Lamine Hendrix; Legal Assistant Nicole Lee; Summer Intern Rosanne Niforos; Assistant U.S. Attorney Adrienne Moran, who conducted initial witness interviews; and Assistant U.S. Attorney Angela Saffoe, who investigated and presented the government’s case at trial.
