District Man Sentenced to 14 Years in Prison
For Sexually Assaulting His Teenage Daughter

     WASHINGTON - A 37-year-old Washington, D.C. man was sentenced today to a prison term of 14 years after earlier pleading guilty to sexually abusing his 14-year-old daughter, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. announced.

     The defendant, whose name is not disclosed here to protect the privacy of the victim, pled guilty in June 2011 in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia to one count of first degree sexual abuse of a child with aggravating circumstances. He was sentenced by the Honorable Ronna L. Beck. Upon completion of his prison term, the defendant will be placed on 10 years of supervised release. In addition, the defendant was ordered to undergo sex-offender treatment and supervision, and he must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

     According to the facts proffered by the government at the plea hearing, the defendant sexually assaulted his daughter in December 2010 while she was spending the weekend with him at his home in Southeast Washington. He told his daughter that he wanted to wrestle with her, and then he took her to a bedroom, where he sexually fondled her and then engaged in a sexual act with her. As a result, the teenager contracted a sexually transmitted infection.

     In announcing the sentence, U.S. Attorney Machen praised the extraordinary work of Detective Kenneth A. Carter of the Metropolitan Police Department’s Youth Investigations Division, who obtained a detailed statement from the defendant in this case. He acknowledged the outstanding work of the Child and Adolescent Protection Center of Children’s National Medical Center, and the Children’s Advocacy Center, which provided critical services and treatment to the victim. He also recognized those who worked on the case from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, especially Victim Advocate Veronica A. Vaughan, Paralegal Kristy Penny, and Legal Assistant Nicole Lee. Finally, U.S. Attorney Machen commended Assistant U.S. Attorney HelenAnne Listerman, who investigated and prosecuted the case.
