District Man Pleads Guilty to Assault in Stabbing,
And to Obstruction of Justice
- Victim Was Stabbed in the Stomach, Left on the Ground, Bleeding from Wounds -

     WASHINGTON - Kevin Miller, 47, of Washington, D.C., has pled guilty to charges stemming from a stabbing that took place last year in Northeast Washington, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. announced.

     Miller pled guilty October 13, 2011, in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, to charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and obstruction of justice. He is to be sentenced December 16, 2011 by the Honorable Ronna L. Beck. Miller faces up to 30 years in prison.

     According to the government’s evidence, on September 9, 2010, at about 5 p.m., Miller and two others approached the victim in the rear of the 1200 block of Mount Olivet Road NE. One of the other assailants assaulted the victim by punching him in the face. The victim ran away, chased by Miller, who opened a knife in his hand.

     Miller caught the victim and stabbed him about the chest and torso area several times. Miller then proceeded to assault the victim with his fists, joined by one of the other assailants. The victim fell, bleeding from his stab wounds, as the three assailants fled the area.

     Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) officers were dispatched to the area and found the victim, bleeding on the ground. The victim was hospitalized and it took more than 40 staples to close wounds in his torso area.

     On October 6, 2010, after being released from the hospital, the victim saw Miller and one of the other assailants walking near the area where the attack took place. MPD officers responded to the area and Miller and his accomplice were arrested. A subsequent investigation led police to the third suspect. The other two defendants have pled guilty to charges in the case.

     As a part of the guilty plea, Miller also has admitted that he altered a letter from the D.C. government, which was addressed to him on unrelated matters, and that he attempted to use the letter as evidence in this case. The fabricated part of the letter stated that a DVD recording of Miller’s statements to police after his arrest had been altered. The letter further stated that the police had launched an internal investigation into police misconduct and that two police officers associated with the case had been dismissed from the department. The government confirmed that the letter was fake and that no such internal investigation existed. Police subsequently executed a search warrant on Miller’s jail cell and found “draft versions” of the letter. Miller admitted that he fabricated the letter with the intend to influence the outcome of the case.

     In announcing the plea, U.S. Attorney Machen commended MPD Detective Steven Manley of the Fifth District Criminal Investigation Division, who led the investigation, as well as Detectives Dwayne Jackson, John Hamer and Thomas Stein and Officers Jeffrey Jones, Helen Andrews, Charles Marshall and Nathaniel Covington. Finally, U.S. Attorney Machen expressed his appreciation to Paralegal Kalisha Johnson-Clark, who prepared the case for indictment, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Terry Eaton, from the Fifth District Unit of the Superior Court Felony Major Crimes Section, who prosecuted this case.
