District Men Sentenced in Pair of Attacks on the Same Victim
- Victim Was Stabbed in Both Incidents, and Told: “I Knew I’d Catch You Alone” -

     WASHINGTON - Three men were sentenced today to prison terms for a pair of attacks in Southeast Washington against the same victim, U.S. Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. announced.

     The men were convicted in September 2011, following a trial in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and sentenced by the Honorable Ann O’Regan Keary.

     Lucious McLeod, 54, was sentenced to a prison term of 17 years for assault with intent to kill while armed, aggravated assault while armed, felony assault, and obstruction of justice. Antoine Richardson, 36, and Jamarr Medley, 29, were sentenced to 11 ½-year and 7 ½- year terms, respectively, on charges of aggravated assault while armed, assault with a dangerous weapon, and felony assault. All three defendants are from Washington, D.C.

     According to the government’s evidence, on November 10, 2009, the victim, then 51, was walking near Benning Road and 46th Place SE when Richardson approached him and accused him of providing crack cocaine to one of his girlfriends. As a verbal argument ensued, Richardson swung a metal object at the victim, striking him in the head. The victim tried to defend himself, and Medley struck him in the back with a chair, breaking the chair into pieces. Then Medley stabbed the victim in his side with a sharp object. After the victim fell to the ground, both Richardson and Medley kicked him until they heard sirens and fled the scene.

     Throughout the following months, Medley and McLeod approached the victim and another witness about the altercation, trying to “make peace” and/or intimidate the victim and dissuade him from testifying or pursuing charges. On November 1, 2010, less than a month before Richardson and Medley were to stand trial for the initial attack, the victim was walking in the 4800 block of Texas Avenue SE – approximately three blocks from the location of the first assault – when he was approached by McLeod. McLeod called his name and then stabbed him in the chest and back several times. McLeod stated, “I knew I’d catch you alone.”

     In announcing the sentences, U.S. Attorney Machen expressed his appreciation to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and particularly praised the work of Detectives Bernard Wood, Peter Shaw, Jeffrey Dixon, Carlton Herndon, Andrea Latson, Eric Roche, Thomas Sepulveda, Simon Yammine, Robert Cephas, Alfred Braxton, and Lee Littlejohn; Sgts. Durriyyah Habeebullah and Ernie Grant; Officers Walter Smith, John Crowley, Tiffany Jones, Marcus Smith, Mark Lacomec, Kurt Hanson, and Thomas Ellingsworth; Crime Scene Search Officer Janice Brown, and Mobile Crime Technician Fred Brown. U.S. Attorney Machen also commended U.S. Attorney’s Office Paralegals Phaylyn Hunt and Teresa Nelson, Information Technology Specialists Leif Heckling, Jeannie Lattimore-Brown, and Tracy Van Atta; Legal Interns Sarah Mortazavi and Chris Young; and Victim/Witness Specialist Jennifer Clark and Victim/Witness Security Specialists Shawn Slade. Finally, he commended Assistant U.S. Attorneys J.P. Cooney, Melinda Williams, and Erik Kenerson, who investigated and indicted the case, and Heather Carlton and David Gorman, who prosecuted the case at trial.
