David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that JOSE RIVERA, also known as “Illy” 33, of New Haven, was sentenced yesterday by United States District Judge Janet Bond Arterton in New Haven to 96 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for illegally selling firearms.

According to court documents and statements made in court, between February and May 2011, RIVERA sold two rifles and 12 shotgun shells to an individual working with law enforcement.

RIVERA’s criminal history includes felony convictions for weapons, burglary and robbery offenses.
Prior to his sentencing, RIVERA waived his right to indictment and pleaded guilty to two counts of engaging in the business of dealing in firearms without a license.

RIVERA has been detained since his arrest on May 20, 2011. 

This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Rahul Kale.
