HAMDEN MAN SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS IN
FEDERAL PRISON FOR TRAFFICKING COCAINE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 13, 2012

David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that NELSON PEREZ-GUZMAN, 38, of Hamden, was sentenced yesterday by United States District Judge Janet C. Hall in Bridgeport to 120 months of imprisonment, followed by five of supervised release, for trafficking cocaine.

According to court documents and statements made in court, PEREZ-GUZMAN and 25 others were charged as a result of an FBI New Haven Safe Streets Task Force investigation into a New Haven-area narcotics trafficking organization.  The investigation included the use of court-authorized wiretaps that recorded defendants on numerous occasions arranging the purchase and distribution of kilograms of cocaine.

On January 13, 2012, PEREZ-GUZMAN, pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiring to distribute and to possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine.  The first count related to PEREZ-GUZMAN’s distribution of cocaine in and around New Haven, as revealed by the FBI Task Force investigation in 2010.  PEREZ-GUZMAN also was charged in the District of Puerto Rico for participating in a separate drug distribution conspiracy.  The second count to which he pleaded guilty satisfied his federal criminal liability as to this offense, and the charges against him in Puerto Rico will be dismissed.

PEREZ-GUZMAN was arrested on December 17, 2010.  A search of his Hamden residence on that date revealed more than one kilogram of cocaine and $14,394 in cash.  PEREZ-GUZMAN was ordered to forfeit the seized cash.

This case was investigated by the FBI New Haven Safe Streets Task Force, which includes officers from the Hamden, Milford and New Haven Police Departments, as well as the State of Connecticut Department of Correction.  The West Haven Police Department also has provided valuable assistance to the investigation.

U.S. Attorney Fein also recognized the assistance of the New Haven Police Department’s Tactical Narcotics Unit and its Street Interdiction Unit for their assistance in making the arrests and seizures in this case.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Michael E. Runowicz and Special Assistant United States Attorney Joseph Vizcarrando.
