David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that federal jury in Hartford has found SHANA MOSELEY, 26, of New Haven, guilty of one count of making false declarations before a grand jury.  The trial before United States District Judge Robert N. Chatigny began on Monday, January 30, and the jury returned the verdict today.

According to the evidence at trial, on February 21, 2007, Connecticut parole officers and officers with the U.S. Marshals Service Violent Fugitive Task Force arrested MOSELEY’s then-boyfriend, Thomas Julius, at MOSELEY’s New Haven residence.  On that date, officers also seized a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol from the room where they encountered Julius.
           
On October 23, 2007, in relation to Julius’ possession of the firearm, MOSELEY testified before a federal grand jury and stated that she had never touched or seen the firearm prior to Julius’ arrest on February 21, 2007.  This testimony was false, as MOSELEY had previously seen and touched the firearm.
           
The evidence at trial included MOSELEY’s DNA, which was recovered from the firearm, as well as recorded conversations between MOSELEY and Julius.
           
Judge Chatigny has scheduled sentencing for April 20, 2012, at which time MOSELEY faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years and a fine of up to $250,000.
           
On September 15, 2011, Julius pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a stolen firearm.  On December 8, 2011, he was sentenced to 120 months of imprisonment.
           
This matter has been investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the United States Marshals Service, the New Haven Police Department, and the Connecticut Department of Correction, Parole and Community Services.  This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Sarah P. Karwan and Anthony E. Kaplan.
