COLORADO SPRINGS MAN SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR POSSESSION WITH INTENT TO DISTRIBUTE CRACK COCAINE

DENVER – Dwight Edmond Sago, age 37, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, was sentenced to serve 120 months (10 years) in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, Paul Farley, Associate U.S. Attorney, and Richard Chase, Special Agent in Charge of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, announced today.  Following his prison sentence, Sago was ordered to serve 5 years of supervised release.  Sago, who appeared in custody, was remanded.

Dwight Edmond Sago was indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver on June 2, 2008.  He was convicted of the drug offense on January 22, 2009 following a 3 day jury trial.  Sago was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge John L. Kane on April 24, 2009.

According to facts presented to the jury during trial, as well as information contained in the “Government’s Sentencing Statement,” on the evening of March 20, 2008, members of the Colorado Springs Police Department were investigating alleged drug dealing at an apartment where there was a large amount of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.  Officers observed multiple subjects entering into an apartment for a short duration and then leave, consistent with illegal narcotic trafficking.

One of the people in the apartment was Sago, the defendant.  Officers made contact with Sago, who in turn walked away, getting into a vehicle.  The defendant was then arrested.  A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of crack cocaine on the floor of the car, a separate amount of crack in his pockets, and a third amount of crack in a false bottom of a can.

A .44 caliber revolver was also uncovered.  Sago had a previous conviction in 1996 in the State of Indiana for Attempted Carjacking.

Sago was also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm during and relation to a drug trafficking crime.  He was acquitted of both firearm crimes.

This case was investigated by the Colorado Springs Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

Sago was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kurt Bohn.
