DEFENDANT SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON FOR WALKING AWAY FROM DENVER HALFWAY HOUSE

DENVER – Alejandro Barron-Reyes, age 34, formerly of Pueblo, Colorado, was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Court Judge Marcia S. Krieger to serve 18 months in federal prison for escape, Associate U.S. Attorney Paul Farley announced.  Judge Krieger ordered that Barron-Reyes’ sentence be served consecutively to an earlier sentence for drug trafficking.  The defendant, who appeared in court in custody, was remanded.

Alejandro Barron-Reyes was indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver for escape on November 17, 2008.  He pled guilty before Judge Krieger on March 2, 2009.  He was sentenced yesterday, May 11, 2009.

According to the stipulated facts contained in the plea agreement, on July 14, 2000, Barron-Reyes was arrested on a DEA warrant in Pueblo for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.  He was sentenced on that charge on January 12, 2001 to serve 108 months in federal prison.  Barron-Reyes served his in custody time at the Federal Correctional Institute in Florence, starting on January 25, 2001.  He was released to a Denver halfway house on March 1, 2007, to serve the remainder of his sentence, which at the time was approximately 14 months.

On May 28, 2007, the defendant was found missing from the halfway house.  On October 20, 2008, Barron-Reyes was arrested in Pueblo by the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office.  The Sheriff’s Office notified the U.S. Marshals Service, who picked up the defendant and transported him to FCI Englewood, to serve the remainder of his drug trafficking sentence.  According to the Bureau of Prisons, the defendant’s current projected release date in the original drug case is December 29, 2009.

This case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service, with assistance from the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office.
