BUREAU OF PRISONS SECRETARY SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF A WARD

DENVER – Janine Sligar, age 47, presently of Wray, Colorado, was sentenced Thursday to serve 6 months in federal prison for the sexual abuse of a ward.  Following her prison sentence, Sligar was ordered to serve 5 years of supervised release.  She was also ordered to register as a sex offender.  She is scheduled to surrender to a facility designated by the Bureau of Prisons on March 2, 2009.

Janine Sligar was indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver on July 22, 2008.  She pled guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Robert E. Blackburn on October 3, 2008.  Sligar was sentenced by Judge Blackburn on January 29, 2009.

According to the stipulated facts contained in the plea agreement, Sligar, a 14 year veteran with the Bureau of Prisons, had a physical sexual relationship with an inmate she met while he cleaned her office.  They met in February 2007.  The relationship started in July of 2007, and ended in October 2007.  The two had relations between 10 and 20 times in a staff restroom.  Sligar worked at the Federal Prison Camp in Florence, Colorado.

Sligar also admitted to using the camera on her cell phone to take graphic pictures of a sexual nature.

This case was investigated by Craig Trautner, a Special Agent with the United States Department of Justice’s Office of the Inspector General.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Linda McMahan.
