DAVID GAOUETTE APPOINTED U.S. ATTORNEY AND SWORN IN BY CHIEF U.S. DISTRICT COURT JUDGE WILEY Y. DANIEL
DENVER – David M. Gaouette, age 54, of Lakewood, Colorado, has been appointed U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado by Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr. Prior to the appointment, Gaouette served as Acting U.S. Attorney after the resignation and departure of Troy A. Eid. The Attorney General’s appointment took effect on Saturday, August 8, 2009, and lasts for 120 days, or until someone is nominated by the President and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. If by the end of the 120 day term there is no such qualified person, then the court will appoint a U.S. Attorney. That appointment will last until a successor is named and confirmed.
Gaouette was sworn in on Tuesday, August 11th, 2009 by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Wiley Y. Daniel. His family attended the private ceremony in the Chief Judge’s chambers.
Gaouette was first appointed as the Acting U.S. Attorney on Saturday, January 10, 2009, after Troy Eid, the Presidentially appointed U.S. Attorney, resigned on Friday, January 9, 2009 to focus on his private law practice.
Gaouette, who prior to being the U.S. Attorney and Acting U.S. Attorney, was First Assistant U.S. Attorney and Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney. He has been with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Colorado for 20 years.
In 1976 Gaouette received his undergraduate degree from Florida State University. He received his law degree from the University of Denver in 1982. Before becoming an attorney, Gaouette was a police agent (officer) with the Lakewood Police Department from 1976 until 1984. In November 1984, Gaouette became an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, where he served in the trial, grand jury, and appellate divisions.
In 1989, Gaouette became an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Colorado, assigned to the Mountain States Drug Task Force. While with the District of Colorado, Gaouette has been the Deputy Coordinator of the West Central Region of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), the Chief of the Drug Task Force Division, Deputy Chief of the Criminal Division, Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney, and First Assistant U.S. Attorney. He is admitted to practice law in the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, the United States District Court of Colorado, and the Colorado Supreme Court.
Gaouette is married to the former Sharon Eicher. They have two sons, Brian and Sean.
